Financial Modeling for Cryptocurrencies: The spreadsheet that got me my first 1,000% gain

TL;DR: I created a spreadsheet that automates pulling trending cryptocurrencies, recent tweets, and bullish/bearish sentiment into Google Sheets. You can find it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QtxaDWCoXkIqjPVVkU8DNsx8GBaBd180COwn1CIasa8/copy
I know some crypto users prefer to work in spreadsheets (including myself) so I created a spreadsheet that looks at trending symbols and estimates bullish/bearish sentiment. I never had the time to develop software engineering skills, but the recent launch of a few add-ins has allowed regular joes like myself to harness the power of APIs.

The Beauty of Sentiment Trading

According to Google Trends, the word “sentiment analysis” has been gaining steady traction over the past 5 years.
Sentiment refers to the attitude expressed by an individual regarding a certain topic. This is especially relevant in trading, where so much of the change in price is dictated by emotions:
When it is applied to trading, sentiment can be used (with great potential windfall) as a directional signal to figure out whether you should enter a crypto position within your portfolio.
A way you can utilize sentiment when trading crypto, is to measure the positivity or negativity of a tweet. If recent tweets have been overwhelmingly bullish (aka, the person expects the crypto rise) and movement is beginning to happen in the currency, chances are good that the trend will continue.
Luckily for you, StockTwits already does this with around 225 different cryptocurrencies. And if you can combine the sentiment with trending cryptocurrencies, you can catch the wave right as it forms.

Services Used:

  1. Google Sheets
  2. Spreadstreet Google Sheets Add-in
  3. StockTwits
  4. CoinMarketCap API
Full disclosure: The google sheets add-in is a 14-day free trial, and $15 per month after. However, no one should be refused access on the basis of money (especially true for students and less fortunate). Send me a message, and I will make sure you are not left in the dark.

A note on security

Users have expressed hesitation about running a google sheets add-in on their main computer, so I will attempt to ease those concerns:

How to use the spreadsheet to spot trending cryptocurrencies

You will spend most of your time in the “Analysis” tab, where the trending cryptocurrencies reside.
I am almost always looking at the “By Hour” timeframe, as the “By Day” and “By Week” is usually a missed opportunity…however, those time frames can still be very useful (albeit, for different reasons).
You want to ride the wave on a cryptocurrency under one or both of the following conditions:
  1. The tweets are very recent, preferably within the last hour
  2. Overwhelmingly Bullish sentiment
A Great Example
A Bad Example

Getting the spreadsheet to work for you

1. Install the Spreadstreet add-in for Google Sheets
2. Get sheet ready for use with the add-in
3. After logging into the add-in, refresh the sheet

Troubleshooting

  1. Important Open the template, click the menu Add-ons / Spreadstreet / Help / View in store, and then click Manage and in the dropdown menu click “Use in this document.”
  2. A reload of the entire worksheet fixes quite a few problems.
  3. Deleting and re-pasting the formula in A1 of the “Data” tab fixes things as well.
  4. If all else fails, drop me a message
  5. The “TIMEFRAME” cell in the Analysis tab (B3) refreshes the pull. Change the results for new data.
Some trending coins are not pulling correctly…what’s going on?
StockTwits has a list of ~225 coins it currently supports. See the “TweetInfo” tab for the full list.
I have tried logging in, activating the template with “Use in this document” and refreshed the sheet…still nothing.
Head to the “Data” tab. Delete the formula in cell A1, and repaste the following: =SS(“tickers-coinmarketcap”, headers, “0”, Currency)
Hoping this is something that is useful to everyone, and I am more than happy to help peeps setup the sheet so they can use it. Just send me a message on here.

What Exactly is NEM and How to Keep XEM Safe? | Best NEM Wallets

NEM (short for New Economy Movement) is a dual layer blockchain platform quite similar to Ethereum's, with the main difference being that the former is written in Java. Launched on March 31, 2015, it has a peer to peer cryptocurrency, having the ticker symbol XEM which is 'harvested' using a Proof-of-Importance (PoI) algorithm. NEM's the first cryptocurrency after Bitcoin to have built its code from scratch. Its mainnet supports multiple ledgers on its cryptocurrency layer. The powerful Smart Assets layer supports mosaics to represent any store of value.
NEM has uses in various fields like:
  1. Financial management - financial payments, equity markets, creating a very own cryptocurrency and many more.
  2. Business management - automatic accounting, KYC, loyalty reward points, shipping, inspection and supply chain management.
  3. Secure records - encrypted messaging, anti-counterfeiting, authentication, etc.
  4. Decentralised organisations - voting security and can be used for crowdfunding, stock ownership and ICOs.
Unlike BTC and many other altcoins, NEM/XEM cannot be mined, well not exactly. The process by which new XEM coins can be obtained is called 'harvesting'. The other way to have XEM coins is via exchanges and there are plenty of them like Binance, Bittrex, CoinSwitch, HitBTC, etc.
When it comes to storing the XEM coins, the wallets that are trustworthy are:
There might be many online wallets and many of them might be safe, but the safest option is always a hardware wallet, no matter what. It's important to remember this because if your coins aren't safe, then there's no point in investing and/or trading, as once your coins are gone, there's no way to retrieve them back. Ever!

Cryptocurrencies are on the rise, but they are often surrounded by contradictions. The main problem is that most cryptocurrencies such as bitcoins are not supported by real shares. We Börser seek to change it. Börser is a cryptocurrency supported by the shares of Börser SA, our holding company, which offers you an excellent opportunity to participate in three different projects. Börser SA owns shares in three companies - Mi Wall Street, which specializes in providing high-quality financial services previously reserved for large corporations, a small investor, CrowdingFunds, a blockchain-based crowdfunding platform for investors around the world, and X-Change, which allows customers to easily convert börser cryptocurrency into Fiat currency for a very low fee.
Problem From design to liquidation and everything in between. Starting capital Implementing a brilliant business idea is only the first step on the road to success: you need start-up capital to make your vision a reality. Most often, start-up companies fail because they simply can not meet the right investor in time and attract start-up capital. Moreover, most crowdfunding platforms Fund only those projects that are within the platform's jurisdiction, which creates additional financial obstacles for entrepreneurs. Services for small investors To succeed in what they do, investors must have access to a range of financial services. The problem is that most of them, including managed accounts, Forex and Stock brokerage accounts, as well as accurate trading signals, are only for wealthy investors. Money transfer services The pursuit of better job prospects is only human nature, but as more and more people go to work abroad, a global problem has arisen: remittances. Cryptocurrency and transmission technology of the block chain and create new opportunities for the transformation and modernization of methods of transmitting remittances across borders, but it is often too expensive for most people. Crypto-viewing Over the past few years, the world has witnessed a huge cryptocurrency boom, but the cryptocurrency market remains extremely unstable and unstable. This is due to the very concept of cryptocurrency, which is influenced even by such global "leaders" as bitcoins: cryptocurrencies simply do not reflect real assets. Moreover, the majority of cryptocurrencies are victims of the same flaw: the speed of transactions. Most systems can only process a few transactions per second, and security is often still lacking.
Börser Solutions
Borser hopes to provide the following set of unique features which will offer the vast range of opportunities for the investors and entrepreneurs, alike.
  • Crowdfunding Platform
Users get to fund and embrace upcoming ICOs depending on their respective jurisdictions.
  • MI Wall Street

  • X-Change
The X-change platform will help address the issue of worldwide remittances by offering a seamless, accurate and cost-effective portal for the services.

So why is /r/BTC a Bitcoin Cash fanboy sub?

So all creepto subs are full of idiocy, all have their true believers, spammers, fanbois etc.
But /btc is literally the "ticker symbol" for Buttcore (since butters love LARPing as stock traders) but at a cursory glance the sub is about 50% bashing bitcoin and about 50% espousing the virtues of Buttcash. The buttboin bashing is so common it looks like Buttcoin half the time until you see the "butTcAsh soLvEs thiS!" posts.
What's the deal? Shouldn't this kinda shit be in /BCH or whatever? Not sure if juicy drama or what.

looking back at this, it reads like a tv episode. but all of this actually happened to me, strange world.

  4. If all else fails, drop a line to [email protected]. He will get you running in no time.

Bitfinex: Statement Regarding Upcoming Segwit2x Hard Fork

As the Bitcoin ecosystem approaches what appears to be an impending hard fork, it is important to clearly state Bitfinex’s policies on hard forks.
First, we want to make it clear that Bitfinex does not intend to advocate for or against any particular hard fork. Miners have the prerogative to commit their hashing power to whatever projects they choose, including alternative and incompatible protocol implementations. However, our first obligation is to our customers, who often demand tokens on each chain in the event of a hard fork that lacks clear community consensus. At this time, we do not believe that there is sufficient consensus to identify a clear winner in the Segwit2x hard fork. Accordingly, our customers will have access to tokens on both chains.
We have a responsibility to foster, maintain, and support orderly markets that trade continuously 24/7/365. With a hard fork that lacks clear community consensus, we cannot suspend operations and wait for a winner to emerge. Leveraged trading requires that our markets operate continuously. On operational requirements alone, we must designate such forks as new assets.
As the proposed consensus protocol Segwit2x project appears likely to activate, we have elected to designate the Segwit2x fork as B2X, for now. The incumbent implementation (based on the existing Bitcoin consensus protocol) will continue to trade as BTC even if the B2X chain has more hashing power.
We are doing this for practical and operational reasons. Political considerations are irrelevant here. While we cannot change or re-assign ticker symbols, we can change the label or description associated with that ticker symbol. For the time being, BTC will continue to be labeled as “Bitcoin,” and B2X will be labeled as “B2X.” This will remain the case unless and until such time that market forces suggest an alternative, more appropriate, labeling scheme for one or both chains.
The lack of strong two-way replay protection in Segwit2x means that we must take steps to protect customer funds. At the moment of the fork, all deposits and withdrawals for both BTC and B2X will be halted until we are able to: 1. ‘taint’ our customers’ bitcoins to ensure withdrawals cannot be replayed on both chains; and, 2. ensure that we can properly credit deposits in the event a transaction is replayed on both chains. We expect this process to require at least 24 hours, and potentially significantly longer. If the the event happens, announcements will be made throughout the process to keep everyone up to date.
Margin
In the event of a hard fork that results in a chain split, Bitfinex is also faced with the challenge of resolving peer-to-peer financing issues. Because we have sufficient time to plan for this event we have elected to handle the accounting of peer-to-peer financed trading similar to how stock spinoffs, dividends, and distributions are handled in equity markets.
Specifically, in the case of a hard fork event, lenders will receive both BTC and B2X. Anyone that is short BTC/USD or long any BTC trading pair (ETH/BTC, LTC/BTC, etc.) will owe B2X to the lender, effectively making the user short B2X. An exception is being made where BTC is borrowed but is not in use as financing collateral. In that case, B2X will accrue to the lender. Users that are financed long BTC/USD or short any BTC trading pair will receive B2X.
This methodology is complex and operationally challenging, but we believe it to be, in this case, the most economically correct and fair approach for Bitfinex and our customers. Furthermore, we believe it is the only approach that will keep the BTC lending market functioning throughout a hard fork event.
Imagine a situation where lenders do not receive B2X. They would be incentivised to stop lending if a hard fork appears imminent. Consequently, lending liquidity could completely disappear, and Bitfinex would be obliged to begin partial liquidations of financed positions when BTC loans expire and cannot be renewed.
We believe that such a hypothetical outcome should be avoided. Our plan should prevent the negative consequences of this scenario and seems likely to allow the funding market to continue to operate.
It’s important for borrowers to understand that while their P&Ls may climb during a hard fork event, they will have offsetting B2X liabilities that will be applied to their accounts, though perhaps not immediately. At the moment that Bitfinex detects a B2X block that is incompatible with the existing Incumbent Bitcoin blockchain, we will immediately halt processing of any and all BTC deposits and withdrawals for all users, and freeze all movements for all currencies for any borrower of BTC.
This freeze will last until the B2X accounting can be adequately prepared and addressed. We expect the process to be quick and automated, but we cannot guarantee that it will be immediate. BTC borrowers can hedge or estimate this liability with newly listed Chain Split Token (CSTs). Depending on CST price discovery, we may also increase margin requirements as the Chain Split Event approaches. This should help users protect themselves from liquidations that might occur during potential large swings in the combined value of BTC and B2X in the aftermath of the Chain Split Event. Please note that the order book for the BT2 CST will become the order book for B2X after the fork, providing price continuity and avoiding temporary, but potentially large, swings in overall account equity.
More details on the specific procedures will be forthcoming, but we feel that it is important to address the economic implications as soon as possible, so that our customers can plan accordingly. Bitfinex staff will be available on Whalepool Teamspeak and Bitcoin Mumble servers from time to time to answer customer questions. We will also be building a FAQ document to clarify edge cases and other nuances as needed.

Beginner's Guide to Exchanges - Part 2

Beginner’s Guide to Exchanges – Part 2

A little late, but as promised here is Part 2 of the Beginner’s Guide to Exchanges. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support and feedback in making these.
Link to Part 1
This time I also made a Google Docs survey in the hopes of sharing the results with the community. I thought we could share what we use as a whole and why redditors choose the exchanges they do. For skeptics (as you all should be), I assure you that I am not collecting personal information. This is for recreation and if you are still wary, then by all means abstain!

In Part 3 I will be wrapping up this series by covering decentralized, semi-decentralized, and derivative exchanges. Here it goes!

06 – Fiat Exchanges – South Korea

안녕하세요 여러분! 혹시 우리 한국인 친구 이 보고서를 한국어로 읽고 싶어한다면 알려주세요. 관심이 많이 있다면 간단한 한국어 보고서도 만들 수 있습니다. This year, ETH has taken off like a rocket in the Land of the Morning Calm. With a population of just 50 million, South Koreans account for almost 30% of daily ETH trade volume. Even more surprising is that currently the daily volume of ETH is about 5 times higher than that of Bitcoin on Korean exchanges. Since demand is high, ETH is trading at a premium on Korean exchanges. Some users have been talking about capitalizing off this imbalance by trading on arbitrage between exchanges. For those who have no connection to Korea and hope to do so, I have bad news – all Korean exchanges require a National ID number and access to a Korean bank account. This makes Korean exchanges virtually closed to Korean nationals and those with long-term visas. Sorry everyone.

07 – Fiat Exchanges – China

With a great deal of anticipation, major Chinese exchanges started trading ETH this summer. Since these exchanges deal huge volumes of Bitcoin already, naturally it was expected that they invest heavily into ETH as well. So far this hasn’t quite lived up to the hype with many exchanges still favoring Bitcoin, Litecoin, Altcoins, and even Ethereum Classic (Gulp). Three of these exchanges underwent inspections by the Peoples Bank of China earlier this year and will be working closely with the government to ease fears of money laundering and market manipulation. There are a lot of Chinese sites, and since my Chinese is non-existent this list is basically just for name recognition. In many ways these sites are very similar in regards to security, verification, and fees compared to their western counterparts; just marketed at a different audience and currency. If users are seriously interested in these exchanges and making reviews, please contribute or ask!
